Person is covered with United States flag and looks safe obtained of asylum

Immigration Attorneys for Asylum process serving Fort Lauderdale, Sunrise, Davie, Plantation, Weston, Tamarac and surrounding areas

The United States continues to be a safe haven for persecuted people from other countries, but not without a rigorous legal process. A person with a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, nationality, religion, political opinion, or for being a members of a specific social group should retain legal representation to get through asylum process with more favorable results.

Ft. Lauderdale Immigration Attorney

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services says there are two ways to obtain asylum in the U.S. – one is affirmative asylum processing with the USCIS, and the other is defensive asylum processing with the executive office for immigration review. The Szabo Law Group is uniquely suited to review many immigration issues, including asylum. Aron Szabo is an attorney with experience in asylum cases and will expertly guide clients through the process.

Asylum Overview

The asylum process begins by filling out Form I-589 within a year of arriving in the U.S. There is no fee to apply. The spouse and children (under 21 and unmarried) who are also in the U.S. can be included in the application at the time of filing or at a later date.

People who apply for asylum can do so after legally or illegally entering the U.S. They must have a well-founded fear of persecution either by their country’s government or by a force beyond the government’s control. They must apply within one year of entering the U.S. However, you may not be eligible for asylum if you had a pervious asylum application denied by an immigration judge or the Board of Immigration Appeals. Furthermore, individuals who can be removed to a safe third country under a two-party or multi-party agreement between the U.S. and other countries will also not be eligible.

Even in straightforward cases, it’s advised that people looking for asylum seek counsel. An experienced immigration attorney can see issues before they come up and keep the asylum proceedings on track. While some people seek asylum on their own, others seek out help through notarios, who are not licensed attorneys and might not know anything at all about the legalities surrounding the immigration process. Rather than risk being permanently barred from asylum due to a marred immigration record, seek the counsel of a licensed attorney with immigration experience.
